This is interesting but personally baffling. I have used x264 for a very long time now (though not exclusively) because of its quality/economy of file size ratio, as well as its mutli-processor threading advantages.

Maybe h264 is a lot differrent? I use Linux, by the way, but also that other operating system, both with VLC and no problems with x264.
